When I was getting my composing for picture chops up, I started entering compeitions. I still do when I have the time.
It’s a great way to learn – deadlines, high expectations and great films ready to write for.
I also really enjoy writing for animated films, as much as I love writing for puppets!
Here’s an example of music I’ve composed specifically for animation.
Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles
A touching scene from a film exploring the true story of how Luis Buñuel made his third movie.
I brought a bit of guitar into this film, to capture the delicate nature of setting, unerscored by a solid but almost ominous drone.

sprite fright
A really fun short film, with a pretty violent ending, it captures some classic moments of the playfulness that can be typical of cartoons from my childhood.
A full orchestral score for this one!

spring
An epic adventure of a girl and her dog!
A joy to write for this film that helped me learn to adapt my writing to tight picture lock, with rapidly shifting and contrasting sections – moving from dark to light.
I was pretty pleased with the romantic style closing melody, too.
